Walk gates
People, bins, and mowers. Latch height you can use.
Gates
A gate is the part of the fence you touch every day. If the post and the hardware are light, the prettiest leaf will drag.
Gate installation covers walk gates in a fence line, driveway gates, and the operators people call automatic or electric. Fence gate repair is the sag, the hinge, and the latch that no longer meets. Those are the searches, and they are the right unit of work: the opening, not a vague “fence job.”
A gate can be wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum, or steel. The leaf should match the fence you have or the fence you are building. An operator is extra scope. It needs power, a swing or slide path, and a decision about what happens when the power is out. We do not sell a remote as if it were the whole gate.
Commercial and residential gates share hardware logic and differ in width. A double drive leaf and a three-foot walk gate are not priced as “a gate.” See commercial fencing and residential fencing for the line around the opening.

Scope
People, bins, and mowers. Latch height you can use.
Width, swing or slide, and the slope in the throat.
Automatic and electric mean a motor, safety, and a manual release. Quoted separately from the leaf.
Sag, hinges, drops, and posts that the gate has pulled.
Self-closing and self-latching when the barrier rule says so. Pool fence.
Wood, vinyl, chain link, or metal so the opening does not look borrowed.
Compare
Pick the motion before the ornament.
| Type | Use | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Single walk | People and a mower | A post that does not twist. |
| Double drive | A vehicle | Room for both leaves or a slide path. |
| Slide or cantilever | Where a swing hits a hill or a car | A track or a counterbalance, and a clear run. |
| Operator | You do not want to get out | Power, safety edges, and a release you can reach. |

Process
Not the old leaf if the old leaf never fit.
Up a hill, into a car, into the pool deck. The open position is part of the design.
Gate posts are not line posts. This is where repairs get cheap and fail.
Hinges, latch, drop rod, closer if required.
A motor will not fix a twisted frame. The frame is first.
From both sides, with the leaf closed on its own if it is supposed to.
Field notes
Adjusting the latch every month is the symptom.
Wood leaves sag on a rectangle with no brace.
The motor burns up doing the job of a hinge.
If the rule wants it high and self-closing, a garden latch is the wrong part.
The leaf opens into the grade and sticks. The layout has to see that.
Electric gate installation adds entrapment risk and a power circuit. Safety devices and a way to open the gate by hand belong in the scope. We will not describe a keypad and call the job finished. If the driveway is commercial, the duty cycle of the operator matters. A light residential arm on a heavy steel leaf is a future repair.
Fence and gate repair go together when the gate caused the lean. Rehanging a leaf on the same soft post is how the call repeats. Read fence repair if the line around the gate is also moving.
Questions
Yes, when the opening, the swing or slide, and the posts are designed together.
Yes, as an added scope on a leaf that is square and on posts that can carry it.
Usually the frame, the hinge, or the post. Sometimes all three. The visit says which.
Often. If the neighboring fence posts are sound, the gate can be its own project.
Swing if you have level room. Slide if the leaf would hit a slope, a car, or a walk.
Yes. Self-closing hardware and latch height follow the barrier rule, not a garden-gate habit.
Yes. Width and duty are specified. See commercial fencing for the yard around them.
Width, material, and whether there is an operator. A walk gate and a double drive gate are different numbers.
