Stain
Color and water shedding on sound wood. Prep is the job, not only the brush.
Maintenance
Stain, paint, and a wash are maintenance. A soft post is a repair. The visit is how we tell them apart.
Fence maintenance is staining, painting, washing, and a hardware check. The search is often “fence staining company” or “fence cleaning” because the line looks tired and the owner hopes it is only the surface. Sometimes it is. Sometimes the gray boards are fine and the posts are not. We look before we quote a stain that would go onto rot.
Wood is the material that wants a finish. Vinyl wants a wash, not a coat of paint. Chain link and aluminum want hinges that still swing and coatings that are not open to rust. Those are shorter visits than a new installation, and they are not a substitute for repair when the structure has failed.
We do not sell a magic coating interval. Exposure, sprinklers, and the product already on the wood decide the next coat. A north side and a south side on the same fence can be a year apart.

Scope
Color and water shedding on sound wood. Prep is the job, not only the brush.
Possible on wood that is ready for it. A poor prep peels and looks worse than weather.
Vinyl, painted surfaces, and mildew film. The wrong chemical etches.
Latches and hinges on the same visit, so the pretty fence still closes.
If we find rot, we stop the finish scope and price the post.
Species and finishes are explained on wood fence.
Compare
Use this before you book a stain because the fence “looks old.”
| What you see | Likely service | Not the service |
|---|---|---|
| Even gray, firm boards | Stain or a decision to leave it | A new fence. |
| Mildew on vinyl | Wash | Paint. |
| Peeling paint | Prep and recoat if wood is firm | Another coat on chalk. |
| Soft post | Repair | Stain over the failure. |
| Rusty hinge | Hardware, maybe coating | A full ornamental replacement by default. |

Process
A firm board gets a finish conversation. A soft post gets a repair conversation.
Stain over paint, or the reverse, fails when nobody asks.
Overspray is part of the scope, not an apology later.
Vinyl and dirty stained wood are not the same chemical.
Wet lumber and direct scorching sun are how finishes fail early.
A realistic season, not a lifetime warranty printed on a webpage.
Field notes
There is no such product in a real yard. Vinyl reduces the cycle. It does not maintain the gate for you.
Color hides a split for a month.
Too much washer pressure raises the grain and makes the next stain look rough.
Sun and sprinklers disagree. The proposal can say so.
A fence staining company should own the prep: mildew wash, loose finish, and a dry surface. We are that visit when the fence is worth coating. If you wanted a new color on a fence that needs posts, we will split the quote so you can choose repair now and stain after, instead of paying twice.
Fence cleaning on vinyl is usually organic film and sprinkler rust. On wood it is mildew before a stain. We do not promise a return to the day the fence was installed. Weathered cedar can be refreshed and still look like wood.
Questions
When water no longer beads and the film is thin, not on a fixed national calendar. Exposure changes it.
We do not plan on it. Vinyl is cleaned. Color is in the material.
No. The post or board is repaired or replaced first.
We can wash it. If the fabric is rusty through, washing is not the fix.
It can be sequenced. Fresh repair lumber may need to dry before it takes stain.
Area, prep, and how many sides. A one-side street face is not a two-side privacy quote.
